(IsraelNN.com) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday the
countdown to Israel's destruction has begun.

Ahmadinejad said that Hizbullah began the countdown in its war with
the IDF last summer. "With Allah's help, the countdown button to this
regime's [Israel's] destruction has been pushed by the hands of
Lebanon and Palestine's children," he said in a speech to foreign
guests in Tehran in honor of the 18th anniversary of the death of
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iran's first Supreme Leader. " By Allah's
will, we will witness the destruction of this regime in the near
future thanks to the endeavors of Palestinian and Lebanese fighters."

Ahmadinejad's previous statement, regarding Israel being "wiped off
the map," was a quote of Khomeini.

Supreme Leader Promises Iran Won't Back Down
Iran's "Supreme Leader" Ayatollah Ali Khameini declared Monday that
Iran refuses to "beg world powers for its right to develop nuclear
technology" and has demonstrated that it will not retreat from the
"field of danger" and will protect those rights.

"The world has learned from experience that an Iranian will never step
back from the field of danger when defending his rights," Khameini
said during a televised address Monday.

Assad Hope For United War
Ahmadinejad spoke with Syrian president Bashar Assad this past week,
during which Assad is reported, by Iran's state-run news agency, to
have said that "added coordination between Iran and Syria in
confrontation with the Zionist regime and the USA can bear better
results in the future."

The Iranian president congratulated Assad on his reelection. Assad ran
unopposed and won 97% of the vote.

American-Iranians Imprisoned by Iran
Iran has imprisoned four American citizens: Haleh Esfandiari, Parnaz
Azima, Kian Tajbakhsh and Ali Shakeri. Esfandiari, a professor, was
visiting relatives in Iran, where she is from, when she was arrested.
She has now been charged with trying to topple the government. It was
reported that Esfandiari's husband is Jewish.

US President George W. Bush has condemned the arrests and issued a
demand Friday that Iran release the captives. "These individuals have
dedicated themselves to building bridges between the American and
Iranian people, a goal the Iranian regime claims to support," Bush
said. "Their presence in Iran - to visit their parents or to conduct
humanitarian work - poses no threat. Indeed, their activities are
typical of the abiding ties that Iranian-Americans have with their
land of origin."

New Iranian TV Series Outlines Ahmadinejad's European Israel Idea
Iran's state-run television has begun airing a docu-drama series
outlining Ahmadinejad's view that the Jews were given Israel due to
the Holocaust, and that Europe must create a state of Israel on its
own soil instead of on land belonging to the Arabs. The series, "A
Zero Degree Turn" is aired weekly at prime time and six out of 22
chapters have aired.

The plot focuses on the idea of emigration to Israel being conceived
by Nazis, Europeans and non-traditional Jews – featuring a central
rabbinic character rejecting a call to move to the Holy Land.
"External pressures are trying to settle the Jews and the Muslims
together, and it is impossible," the rabbi in the series says. "The
Jewish fate has always been complicated and difficult. The solution is
not emigration to Arab countries, where there are Arab citizens."

Any mention of Jewish immigration and hassidic sects that made Aliyah
(immigrated to Israel) before World War II were omitted.

Iranian TV series casts Israel as European problem
By Yoav Stern

Iranian state television has begun airing a prestigious drama series
that claims that the Jews reached Palestine because of persecution
during World War II. The episodes aired thus far are in line with the
Iranian government's official stance that the Israeli-Arab conflict is
essentially a European problem and therefore Jews in Israel should
return to their home countries in Europe.

The series, "A Zero Degree Turn" is aired weekly at prime time. So far
six of its 22 installments have apparently been shown. It tells the
story of a young Iranian named Habib Parsan, played by a well-known
Iranian actor, Shihab Hassini, who goes to Paris to study at
university before the war. He befriends a young Jewish woman by the
name of Sarah Struk, who fears the growing strength of the Nazis in
Germany. The two friends are very embarrassed when a group of students
jeer Sarah after seeing the two together on a public bench.

So far the series shows considerable financial investment. It was
filmed in Tehran, Budapest and Paris, and includes dozens of actors,
some of whose voices are dubbed in Persian.

The producers' stance on the Holocaust is not clear. Iranian President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has has called the Holocaust a "myth," and the
international Tehran conference on the Holocaust a few months ago
included Holocaust deniers among the speakers.

The series mentions anti-Semitism. In one instance the character
Schmidt, a German student, says the war was being forced on Germany,
and adds that the Jews are the victims because "it is clear that the
Jews have been in positions of economic power for the past 20 years."
Sarah's father is killed during Kristallnacht, and her family worries
about what the future holds for them.

It is important for the creators to emphasize that the emigration of
European Jewry to Israel stemed from the Nazis, Europeans and certain
Jews, and to leave out the role of Jewish philosophers. Sarah's uncle,
Rabbi Weiss, rejects the call to emigrate to Palestine: "External
pressures are trying to settle the Jews and the Muslims together, and
it is impossible. The Jewish fate has always been complicated and
difficult. The solution is not emigration to Arab countries, where
there are Arab citizens."

In the episodes aired to date the fate of the family is unclear.

According to Amir Levy, director of the teleprocessing department of
the Satlink satellite company, who is following the series, the makers
of the series wish to relay a message that Iran has traditionally
treated Jews well, as opposed to the racism and persecution they
encountered in Europe. Levy says that other messages are emphasized as
well, such as the claim that Iran is the cradle of civilization
because ancient Persia and its philosophy predate Greek philosophy.

UN condemns Ahmadinejad comments
Friday, 8 June 2007
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6733487.stm

Ban criticised the Iranian comments as against the UN charter
UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said he was "shocked and dismayed" at recent
comments by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about Israel.
Iran's official news agency reported Mr Ahmadinejad saying that the
world would soon see Israel's destruction.

He said the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 showed for the
first time Israel's weakness.

The Iranian leader is a trenchant critic of Israel and has said the
Holocaust of European Jewry is a myth.

The hegemony of Israel had collapsed, and the Lebanese nation pushed
the button to begin counting the days until the destruction of the
Zionist regime.

"The secretary-general points out that the state of Israel is a full
and longstanding member of the United Nations with the same rights and
obligations as every other member," the UN statement read.

"Under the United Nations Charter, all members have undertaken to
refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial
integrity or political independence of any state."

Controversial comments

Mr Ahmadinejad was quoted by Irna, the official Iranian news agency,
as saying: "The hegemony of the occupier regime [Israel] had
collapsed, and the Lebanese nation pushed the button to begin counting
the days until the destruction of the Zionist regime."

"God willing, in the near future we will witness the destruction of
the corrupt occupier regime," Mr Ahmadinejad said.

In October 2005, the Iranian president made a statement in which he
envisaged the replacement of Israel with a Palestinian state. This was
widely translated as a call for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

While he has repeated similar comments many times, he has insisted
that Iran is not a threat to Israel.

Israel failed to achieve its stated aims in the war with Hezbollah
last year.

An Israeli inquiry into the war concluded in April that Israel's
political and military leaders were guilty of "very serious failings"
in handling the war.
