[wvns] ACTION ALERT: Canadian at Guantanamo Bay
WRITE GOVERNMENT TO ENSURE FAIR TREATMENT OF
CANADIAN OMAR KHADR IN GUANTANAMO BAY
The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) asks
people of conscience to contact their local MP, Foreign Minister Peter
MacKay and Prime Minster Steven Harper to ensure that Canada meets
with American officials over the imprisonment of Canadian citizen Omar
Khadr. Khadr has been held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for five years.
A minor when apprehended by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Mr. Khadr and
his lawyers report that he is being mistreated and threatened with
transfer overseas to be tortured. For the first time last week he was
allowed to call home.
Both British and Australian governments have conducted intense
negotiations with American officials over the treatment and legal
rights of their citizens held at Guantanamo Bay.
Guntanamo Bay's existence has received worldwide criticism for not
meeting internationally recognized standards of justice. Government
leaders, United Nations human-rights experts and groups like Amnesty
International and the International Commission of Jurists have called
for its closure and compliance with international law. In a February
letter, former foreign ministers Joe Clark, Lloyd Axworthy, Flora
MacDonald, Bill Graham, John Manley and Pierre Pettigrew all called
upon the Conservative government to break their silence on Guantanamo
Bay and the detention of Mr. Khadr.

TALKING POINTS (Be firm but POLITE)
1. Omar Khadr is a Canadian citizen and Canada should ensure his
detention conditions and trial meet internationally recognized standards.
2. The British and Australian governments have already conducted
intense negotiations with American officials, over the treatment and
legal rights of their citizens held at Guantanamo Bay. Canada must do
the same.
3. Mr. Khadr reports to have received ill-treatment and to have been
threatened with deportation to torture. These claims must be seriously
investigated by Canadian officials.
4. Canada must ensure that the American government allows Mr. Khadr
access to Canadian legal counsel and lawyers of his choice.
5. Denying Mr. Khadr, a Canadian citizen, basic legal rights shows
clear disrespect for Canada and its people.
6. Feel free to add a point of your own.
