On Tuesday June, 5, 2007, at 12 noon, a press conference was held with
the Network of Darfur Voluntary Organizations for Peace and
Development at the Sudanese Media Center in Khartoum.
"We want to explain the current humanitarian situation in Darfur" said
Hasan Bargu, president of the Network. "It represents the effort of
Sudanese" he added, emphasizing the need to increase local Sudanese
efforts in assisting the refugees of Darfur.
The Network of Darfur Voluntary Organizations for Peace and
Development is a network of local Sudanese humanitarian groups, led by
many prominent activists from Darfur. It is made up of fourteen
committees.
"Our knowledge of the Darfur situation helps provide a practical
approach to humanitarian issues" said Adam Ibrahim, chair of the
Network's projects committee.
Ibrahim emphasized the issues of resettlement and rehabilitation of
refugees, reconstruction and building a sense of social peace. "This
will contribute to the solution" he said.
Ali Abu Zayd, vice chair of the activities committee, spoke on the
importance of making water resources available in Darfur. "War
destroyed water resources," he said. "How to make water available is
one of our main concerns."
He also emphasized that fact that women and children are the most
vernable sectors in the refugee camps. "We've given special importance
to women and children who represent 60% of those in the camps."
Al-Fadil Al-Tijani of the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM)/Minawi
and the Darfur Transitional Authority, followed by siting "civil
society's important role in reconstruction."
"It is important to have a collective national effort to help Darfur,"
he said.
Al-Tijani also said that humanitarian efforts need to "move from
emergency aid to development"
"From our perspective [SLM/Minawi] the humanitarian situation is
currently better after Abuja, than before Abuja," Al-Tijani said. But
he also stressed the need for "social reconciliation."
"Organizations from London and Washington will not be concerned with
this" he said.
And while recognizing the importance of international donor
conferences, Al-Tijani was wary of remaking an "Oslo of South Sudan"
or "Berlin of Afghanistan" for Darfur which according to him "failed
and became ink on paper."
Emphasizing the Network's independence, Bargu stated that "the Network
is supported by all because this is humanitarian work." He went on to
state that "we've refused to be used from outside," siting the
attempts of some "foreign groups to pay up to ten thousand dollars to
spread the Bible."
Bargu also rejected the notion that conflict in Darfur is between
"African and Arabs." "This is wrong," he said.
But he also said that there was a need to "reconnect with Arabs and
Muslims," as humanitarian efforts in Darfur have been dominated by
Western groups.
"An Arab conference to address Darfur's humanitarian needs is
scheduled to take place in Khartoum in July" he said.
"The press should help spread the word on humanitarian efforts" he added.
