[wvns] Iraq contaminated

The result of this increased radiation will be an increase in the cancer epidemic throughout the world!

FYI: 54% of the veterans, from first Gulf War, that only lasted a few months, are now on disability.

How many will wind up on disability for the current wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, ect., that have lasted for eight years, with no end in sight?

In her article, The Queen's Death Star, , Lorent Moret wrote:

"The use of Uranium weapons in Gulf War II has resulted in contamination of Europe. Evidence from the measurements of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), Aldermaston, Berkshire, UK," reported the Sunday Times Online (February 19, 2006) in a shocking scientific study authored by British scientists Dr. Chris Busby and Saoirse Morgan.

"The highest levels of depleted uranium ever measured in the atmosphere in Britain, were transported on air currents from the Middle East and Central Asia; of special significance were those from the Tora Bora bombing in Afghanistan in 2001, and the "Shock & Awe" bombing during Gulf War II in Iraq in 2003." http://www.mindfull y.org/Nucs/ 2006/DU-Europe- Moret26feb06. htm

Greater rates of cancer and birth defects near sites
Depleted uranium among poisons revealed in report

More than 40 sites across Iraq are contaminated with high levels or radiation and dioxins, with three decades of war and neglect having left environmental ruin in large parts of the country, an official Iraqi study has found.

Areas in and near Iraq's largest towns and cities, including Najaf, Basra and Falluja, account for around 25% of the contaminated sites, which appear to coincide with communities that have seen increased rates of cancer and birth defects over the past five years. The joint study by the environment, health and science ministries found that scrap metal yards in and around Baghdad and Basra contain high levels of ionising radiation, which is thought to be a legacy of depleted uranium used in munitions during the first Gulf war and since the 2003 invasion.

The environment minister, Narmin Othman, said high levels of dioxins on agricultural lands in southern Iraq, in particular, were increasingly thought to be a key factor in a general decline in the health of people living in the poorest parts of the country.

"If we look at Basra, there are some heavily polluted areas there and there are many factors contributing to it," she told the Guardian. "First, it has been a battlefield for two wars, the Gulf war and the Iran-Iraq war, where many kinds of bombs were used. Also, oil pipelines were bombed and most of the contamination settled in and around Basra.

"The soil has ended up in people's lungs and has been on food that people have eaten. Dioxins have been very high in those areas. All of this has caused systemic problems on a very large scale for both ecology and overall health."

Government study groups have recently focused on the war-ravaged city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, where the unstable security situation had kept scientists away ever since fierce fighting between militants and US forces in 2004.

Toxic zones in Iraq

"We have only found one area so far in Falluja," Othman said. "But there are other areas that we will try to explore soon with international help."

The Guardian reported in November claims by local doctors of a massive rise in birth defects in the city, particularly neural tube defects, which afflict the spinal cords and brains of newborns. "We are aware of the reports, but we must be cautious in reaching conclusions about causes," Othman said. "The general health of the city is not good. There is no sewerage system there and there is a lot of stagnant household waste, creating sickness that is directly affecting genetics. We do know, however, that a lot of depleted uranium was used there.

"We have been regulating and monitoring this and we have been urgently trying to assemble a database. We have had co-operation from the United Nations environment programme and have given our reports in Geneva. We have studied 500 sites for chemicals and depleted uranium.. Until now we have found 42 places that have been declared as [high risk] both from uranium and toxins."

Ten of those areas have been classified by Iraq's nuclear decommissioning body as having high levels of radiation. They include the sites of three former nuclear reactors at the Tuwaitha facility â€" once the pride of Saddam Hussein's regime on the south-eastern outskirts of Baghdad â€" as well as former research centres around the capital that were either bombed or dismantled between the two Gulf wars.

The head of the decommissioning body, Adnan Jarjies, said that when inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived to "visit these sites, I tell them that even if we have all the best science in the world to help us, none of them could be considered to be clean before 2020."

Bushra Ali Ahmed, director of the Radiation Protection Centre in Baghdad, said only 80% of Iraq had so far been surveyed. "We have focused so far on the sites that have been contaminated by the wars," he said. "We have further plans to swab sites that have been destroyed by war.

"A big problem for us is when say a tank has been destroyed and then moved, we are finding a clear radiation trail. It takes a while to decontaminate these sites."

Scrap sites remain a prime concern. Wastelands of rusting cars and war damage dot Baghdad and other cities between the capital and Basra, offering unchecked access to both children and scavengers.

Othman said Iraq's environmental degradation is being intensified by an acute drought and water shortage across the country that has seen a 70% decrease in the volume of water flowing through the Euphrates and Tigris rivers.

"We can no longer in good conscience call ourselves the land between the rivers," she said. "A lot of the water we are getting has first been used by Turkey and Syria for power generation. When it reaches us it is poor quality. That water which is used for agriculture is often contaminated. We are in the midst of an unmatched environmental disaster."

HEADS ROLL AT VETERANS ADMINISTRATION
MUSHROOMING DEPLETED URANIUM (DU) SCANDAL BLAMED
by Bob Nichols
http://www.american veterannewspaper .org/newsarchive s.html

Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter changed Monday that the reason Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi stepped down earlier, was the growing scandal surrounding the use of uranium munitions in the Iraq War.

Writing in Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter No. 169, Arthur N. Berklau, executive Director of Veterans for Constitutional Law in New York, stated, "The real reason for Mr. Principi's departure was really never given, however a special report published by eminent scientist Lauren Moret naming depleted uranium as the definitive cause of the "Gulf War Syndrome" has fed a growing scandal about the continued use of uranium munitions by the U.S. Military."

Berklau continued, "This malady (from uranium munitions), that thousands of our military have suffered and died from, has finally been identified as the cause of this sickness, eliminating the guessing. The terrible truth is now being revealed." He added, "Out of the 580,400 solders who served in GW1 (the first Gulf War), of them 11,000 are now dead! By the year 2000, there were 325,000 on Permanent Medical Disability. This astounding number of ‘Disabled Vets’ means that a decade later, 56% of those soldiers who served have some form of permanent medical problems!" The disability rate for the wars of the last century was 5 percent; it was higher, 10 percent, in Viet Nam.

"The VA Secretary (Principi) was aware of this fact as far back as 2000," wrote Berklau. "He, and the Bush administration have been hiding these facts, but now, thanks to Moret's report, (it) … is far too big to hide or to cover up!" "Terry Jamison, Public Affairs Specialist, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Department of Veterans Affairs, at the VA Central Office, recently reported that "Gulf Era Veterans" now on medical disability, since 1991, number 518,739 Veterans," said Berklau.

"The long-term effects have revealed that DU (uranium oxide) is a virtual death sentence," stated Berklau." Marlon Fulk, a nuclear physical chemist, who retired from the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab, and was involved with the Manhattan Project, interprets the new and rapid malignancies in the soldiers (from the 2003 Iraq War) as "spectacular… and a matter of concern!" When asked if the main purpose of using DU was for "destroying things and killing people", "Fulk was more specific; "I would say it is the perfect weapon for killing lots of people!" Principi could not be reached for comment prior to deadline.

Bob Nichols is a wannabe journalist - the "journal of preventive psychiatry" is an e-mail list - Leuren Moret is not really a scientist unless you consider anyone who got a degree in science to be a scientist. Most people require actual work, actual scientific discoveries, before calling someone a scientist. This entire posting, dug out of 2004 or 2005 is bogus. DUSTory-owner@yahoogroups.com

Marion Fulk is mentioned as being a Manhattan Project scientist. Marion Fulk was a "Chemist" at Lawrence Livermore from 1964 to 1984 - at some time after that, he met Leuren Moret, who never worked at Livermore while Fulk was there. Moret was a Sr Scientific Technologist in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing. Moret also filed a document that used Fulk's home address so she may have been living with him at that time. If Fulk were a Manhattan Project Scientist, what was he doing from 1946 (the end of the Manhattan Project) and 1964 when he began his 20 year Livermore career. I am looking for more detail on Fulk and may even go visit his home/former home to determine if any of the neighbors recall how old that Fulk was. If someone lies about who they are, why is it that people believe what they have to say. Tell me, why is an internet con artist more believable than one that you meet on the street. Meeting the street one, "Midnight Magic" the other night in the Financial District of San Francisco immediately reminded me of Moret, Bob Nichols, her mouthpiece, and Marion Fulk, the alleged Manhattan Project Scientist who was probably less than 10 years old when the Manhattan Project closed. Any reader know anything about Fulk, if so, write to DUStory@yahoogroups.com - meantime go read the reply I got from Livermore to my California Public Records Act request at http://www.archive.org/details/LeurenKMoret-RealJobAtLawrenceLivermoreNationalLaboratory
