Zundel appeal rejected

MANNHEIM - A German federal court on September 12 rejected
an appeal by Ernst Zundel to have his conviction earlier this year
for Volksverhetzung - "mass incitement" - overturned. The charge
stems from the revisionist dissident's questioning Holocaust dogma
on the Internet and in writings while living in Canada as well as the
United States, where he sought political asylum in 2000.

In denying Zundel's appeal, the court rejected 800 carefully crafted
legal arguments of the defense, disregarding all consideration of facts
and forensic science.
In sentencing Zundel in February, Judge Ulrich Meinerzhagen stated
the government's position unequivocally: "It is of absolutely no rele-
vance whether the Holocaust happened or not. Denying it is a punish-
able offense. That is the only thing that matters to the court."
The revisionist dissident will now have to serve a maximum sentence
of five years' imprisonment.
