Muslim Police officer in Britain to wear hijab

Muslima Rukshana Begam has worked as a police officer for four years.
This week, as she goes on the beat in Cambridgeshire, she will be the
first policewoman to wear the hijab on duty. Begam, 23, is described
as a practising Muslim; she prays, reads Qur'an, fasts during Ramadan
and has now decided to wear the hijab. She has received full backing
from her employer as well as the greater Muslim community.
Ibrar Hamed, of the Association of Muslim Police in London, stated
that the Metropolitan Police are presently in the course of
introducing the hijab as an option for the standard uniform. In order
to accommodate Begam, Cambridgeshire Specials Co-ordinator aided her
in creating a special hijab that would be fastened with a strip of
poppers, not the usual pins. The poppers ensure that if an assailant
grabbed at the hijab it would simply pull apart, keeping Begam safe on
the job.
Begam was always interested in the police. After discovering more
about public services from her studies at college she had no
uncertainties that this was her calling. Although she knew that
achieving this goal would be an uphill battle. After her parents
learned that she wanted to join the police force, they promptly
expressed their disapproval, fearing for her safety and wishing her to
continue her education to acquire a degree. However, Begam and her
parents quickly came to an agreement that she would continue
university and join the Specials, working part time. Her father is now
very proud of his daughter's decision and determination.
It has now been four years since she joined the Specials, during this
time she has encountered everything from directing traffic to dealing
with public disorder offences. This week she will start wearing the
hijab on duty in Cambridgeshire.
Last week in the United States a federal judge upheld a Philadelphia
Police Department ruling that a female officer has no right to wear a
hijab on duty.
