INDONESIA: CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS CONDEMN ANTI-ISLAM VIDEO Jakarta, 11 April (AKI) - Christians and Muslims in Indonesia have condemned a video produced by a Christian group that ridiculed and offended Islam. "Initiatives like this have nothing to do with our philosophy and disciplinary action has been taken against those responsible," Philipus (known by one name), the national representative of the Christian organisation, Lembaga Pelayanan Mahasiswa Indonesia (LPMI), told Adnkronos International (AKI). The incriminating video was filmed by the LPMI'S Malang section of East Java during a spiritual ritual last December, but was only discovered a few days ago.
The LPMI's stated aim is to "help the growth of Christianity".
Muhammad Nidzom Hidayatullah, the executive secretary of the Malang section of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), Indonesia's top Muslim body, told AKI that the video, which was transfered onto DVD format and distributed nationally, shows a pastor shouting to Muslims, saying that "the Koran (the Muslim holy book) will bring you to hell and is the cause of all evil in Indonesia from terrorism to violence."
The priest then cursed the Koran, and stepped on it.
"The DVD is a slap in the face for us and is against the spirit of multi-religious cohabitation," said Hidayatullah who also quickly added that it had not jeopardised the ties between Muslims and Christians in Malang.
"We have forgiven our Christian brothers and we are satisfied that they have condemned the video," he said.
"But we are not satisfied by the behaviour of the police that appears to be more interested in punishing who watched the video rather than who produced it," he told AKI.
The police inquiry is still open. The Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Muslim organisation in the country, has made an appeal to its members to ensure that the protests against the video do not degenerate into behaviour which will "discredit the Muslims".
The Malang section of the Badan Kerja Sama Gereja an association of Christian churches, announced that it has "sacked" the priest involved in the video. |
